Ego and Anger? Use Vitamin M to Dissolve It. Here’s How

Using mindfulness to dissolve ego and anger.
A shaman was asked, “What is poison?” He replied, “Anything beyond what we need is poison. It can be power, laziness, food, ego, ambition, vanity, fear, anger, or whatever.” So much beauty and depth in this. Reflect on it and ask yourself: Is your anger or ego standing in your way of living your best life or thriving at work, academics, relationships, health, and other areas? If the answer is yes, use the simple yet powerful practice of mindfulness to dissolve them. Learn how.

The Ego Is More Complex Than You Think

The ego is a complex and often misunderstood concept, both in spirituality and science. In spiritual traditions, the ego is often seen as a barrier to higher consciousness, while in psychology and neuroscience, it is viewed as a necessary part of our psychological makeup. However, both perspectives agree that the ego can be a source of suffering and that mindfulness can help us cultivate a healthier relationship with it.

In spiritual traditions, the ego is often defined as the false sense of self that arises from identifying with our thoughts, emotions, and beliefs. When we believe that we are our thoughts or our emotions, we become attached to them and suffer when they change or disappear. The ego creates a sense of separation between ourselves and the rest of the world, leading to feelings of isolation and alienation.

How Can Mindfulness Help?

Mindfulness, on the other hand, is the practice of being present and aware of our thoughts, emotions, and sensations without judgment. By developing mindfulness, we can observe the workings of the ego without becoming identified with them. We can see our thoughts and emotions as passing phenomena rather than absolute truths, allowing us to let go of attachments and find a deeper sense of connection with the world around us.

Science has also shed light on the workings of the ego and the benefits of mindfulness.

Research has shown that the brain has a default mode network that becomes active when we are not focused on a specific task. This network is responsible for self-referential thinking, or thinking about ourselves and our place in the world. When this network is overactive, it can lead to rumination, worry, and anxiety.

Mindfulness has been found to decrease activity in the default mode network, leading to a decrease in self-referential thinking and an increase in present-moment awareness. This shift in brain activity has been associated with a range of benefits, including decreased stress, improved mood, and better cognitive functioning.

The ego can be a source of suffering, but mindfulness can help us cultivate a healthier relationship with it. By developing mindfulness, we can observe the workings of the ego without becoming attached to them, leading to a deeper sense of connection with the world around us.

Science has also shown the benefits of mindfulness for reducing stress, improving mood, and enhancing cognitive functioning. By combining spiritual and scientific perspectives, we can gain a more comprehensive understanding of the ego and mindfulness and how they can help us live a more fulfilling life. The next time you think your anger or ego is getting the better of you, give mindfulness a chance.
