What is salt water gargling? How to do it?

  • You take a teaspoon of salt and dissolve it in a glass of water, preferably warm water.
  • Sip as much solution into the mouth as is comfortable.
  • DO NOT swallow it.
  • Tilt your head back and gargle until you can. Swish it around your mouth and spit it out.

Why warm water?

When you use warm water, the salt quickly dissolves in it. You can opt to use room temperature water, too but remember warm water is soothing for your throat.

The science behind salt water gargling

How does this work? Saltwater draws out water from our oral tissues (osmosis effect) to relieve inflammation. It also helps break up thick mucus, allergens, irritants, bacteria, fungi, and other pathogens from the throat. It creates a small barrier that doesn’t allow pathogens to get back into your tissues and lead to more infection.

Why do even medical doctors recommend it even though this is not an allopathic remedy? Because it works. It is also a clinically proven remedy to prevent upper respiratory tract infections.
