Sattu Shikanji - Beat the Heat the Desi Way

Traditional to Kolkata and Bihar, sattu is an extremely cooling food that hard-working laborers usually eat for their main meals, because it keeps them full and provides quality protein, and keeps their bodies protected from the scorching sun. It is also extremely light on the digestive system. In short, sattu is known as the great Indian protein shake. Learn to make the instant Shikanji which will give an instant cooling effect to your body.

Ingredients
  

  • A glass of water
  • 3-4 tbsp sattu
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1/2 tsp roasted jeera powder/cumin powder
  • 1/2 tsp chaat masala
  • 1/2 tsp black salt
  • Chopped green chili, as per taste
  • 2 tsp coriander leaves, finely chopped
  • 2 tsp mint leaves, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp raw mango, finely chopped

Instructions
 

  • Add water, sattu, salt, black salt, roasted cumin powder, chaat masala, green chili, onion, coriander leaves, mint leaves, and lemon juice to a bowl. Mix well.
  • Pour the mix into a glass. Add raw mango, coriander leaves, and mint leaves to it.
  • Sattu Shikanji is ready to be served.

Power Tips and Variations

  • You can also opt to use barley sattu (jau sattu) made of roasted barley if it suits you.
  • Pour in a few drops of raw honey if you want your Shikanji to be sweeter.
