4 Surprising Reasons Why Celtic Sea Salt Deserves a Place in Your Kitchen
Imagine you’ve just completed an intense workout, and you reach for a glass of water to rehydrate. But what if your body craves more than just water?
It needs essential minerals, right?
One often-overlooked source of these vital minerals is Celtic Sea Salt.
The Hidden Power of Salt: Why You Shouldn’t Ditch It Completely
Many people today are on low-salt food or eliminate salt entirely from their plate, believing it’s a necessary step for better health. However, this practice can actually be detrimental to the body unless advised by a doctor for specific medical conditions, like high blood pressure or certain kidney issues.
Salt, in the right quantity and quality, plays an essential role in our bodily functions, including cellular metabolism, digestion, immunity, and even the health of our skin and hair. So, before you decide to cut salt from your food, it is important to understand the difference between good and bad salt, and why salt should remain a vital part of your daily intake.
The Importance of Salt in Cellular Health
Salt is not just a flavor enhancer; it’s needed for maintaining the electrolyte balance in our cells. Every cell in the human body requires sodium to communicate and function properly. When we deprive our bodies of sodium, it triggers sodium sparing, a state where our metabolic processes are compromised because the body struggles to maintain its sodium levels.
Excessive intake of highly refined white salt, or sodium chloride, is harmful to our health, contributing to high blood pressure, cardiovascular issues, water retention, and kidney problems.
While the body only needs about 1.5 teaspoons (around 8 grams) of pure, mineral-rich salt daily for essential cellular functions, the average person consumes far more, often from processed and restaurant foods.
Commercial salt is stripped of vital minerals through extreme heating (up to 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit), which alters its structure and makes it chemically dead. Additives like fluoride, synthetic iodine, and anti-caking agents further harm the body, disrupting blood vessel health and raising blood pressure.
Unlike naturally balanced rock salt, refined salt lacks trace minerals like selenium, which is required to manage blood pressure and support heart and kidney health. This over-refinement removes what the body needs, leaving it with a form of salt that does more harm than good.
So, which salt should one consume?
For healthier salt options, consider unrefined salts. One of these is Celtic salt, which is rich in essential minerals that support cellular health, without the additives found in common refined table salt. It is a mineral-rich gift from the sea that offers much more than just flavor to your meals.
What is Celtic Sea Salt?
Celtic sea salt is harvested directly from the coastal regions of France, where seawater is evaporated using ancient methods. This natural process allows the salt to retain its mineral-rich composition, unlike heavily processed table salt.
Unlike the pure sodium chloride found in refined salts, Celtic salt is unrefined and contains over 80 essential minerals and trace elements such as magnesium, calcium, and potassium, making it a nutrient-dense addition to your platter.
Magnesium, in particular, is one of the standout minerals in Celtic sea salt. This mineral is known for its role in regulating muscle and nerve function, blood sugar levels, and blood pressure. It’s also required for the production of protein, bone development, and DNA synthesis.
According to a study published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, magnesium deficiency is associated with an increased risk of chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Celtic salt can be an effective way to increase your magnesium intake, especially if your food is lacking this mineral.
Celtic Sea Salt vs. Pink Salt: A Simple Comparison
Now, you may have heard about Pink Himalayan Salt, another popular option for health-conscious individuals. Both pink salt and Celtic sea salt are natural, unrefined salts, but they differ in their mineral content and health benefits.
- Celtic Sea Salt: Rich in magnesium, it is particularly beneficial for hydration, as this mineral helps regulate fluid balance in the body. Celtic sea salt is harvested from seawater, and its grayish hue comes from the clay and moisture retained in the salt crystals. It’s known for helping with electrolyte balance, thus aiding muscle function and promoting better energy levels.
- Pink Himalayan Salt: Mined from ancient sea beds in the Himalayas, this salt gets its pink color from iron oxide. While pink salt also contains a variety of minerals, its iron content makes it particularly useful for boosting hemoglobin levels. However, it has lower levels of magnesium compared to Celtic sea salt.
The Benefits of Celtic Sea Salt: A Nutritional Powerhouse
- Supports Hydration:
Drinking water without sufficient electrolytes may prevent your body from absorbing fluids efficiently. Adding a pinch of Celtic salt to your water can help your cells retain fluid better, ensuring optimal hydration, especially after exercise or in hot weather.
- Enhances Adrenal Health:
The adrenal glands, which help manage stress and regulate hormones like cortisol, require adequate minerals to function properly. Celtic salt provides electrolytes essential for adrenal health, especially during periods of high stress or physical activity.
- Balances Electrolytes:
Electrolytes such as sodium, magnesium, and potassium are paramount for muscle function, nerve transmission, and maintaining fluid balance. Celtic salt is an excellent source of these essential electrolytes.
- Improves Digestive Health:
Celtic sea salt can also support digestion by stimulating the production of digestive enzymes, helping your body break down food more effectively. It promotes better nutrient absorption and contributes to overall digestive health.
How to Incorporate Celtic Sea Salt?
Now that you’re aware of the benefits, you might wonder how to use Celtic sea salt in your daily routine.
Salt stimulates the production of digestive enzymes, such as amylase and hydrochloric acid essential for breaking down carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. Without adequate salt, digestive fluids are less effective, leading to:
- Poor digestion
- Bloating
- Flatulence
- Acidity
Eating a high-protein diet without the right stomach acid can cause flatulence and indigestion, not because of the protein itself, but because the body lacks the enzymes to break it down.
Incorporating a little salt (the maximum limit for Celtic salt is 2300 mg or under half a teaspoon) into your morning routine can rev up your digestive system, preventing these issues.
You can prepare your own metabolic drink now that would support your health.
Recipe to Prepare a Sole (Salt Water) Solution
A Sole solution is a natural saltwater mix that is easy to prepare. Drinking Sole water can help remineralize the body, relieve muscle cramps and constipation, balance pH levels, regulate blood sugar, clear lung and sinus congestion, and provide a natural energy boost.
Follow this guide to prepare your solution.
- Use a glass jar to prepare Sole, as glass is ideal for maintaining the purity of the solution. Avoid plastic or metal jars to prevent any interaction with the salt.
- Select pure, unrefined salt, such as Himalayan pink salt, Celtic salt or any high-quality crystal salt. Using unrefined, natural salts provides essential minerals and avoids additives.
- Fill about one-third of the jar with salt crystals.
- Fill the rest of the jar with filtered water, covering the salt completely. Once filled, seal the jar securely, preferably with a non-metal cap (like rubber or plastic) to prevent any metal contact with the solution.
- Allow the mixture to sit for a minimum of 24 hours. This will allow the salt to fully dissolve and saturate the water.
- After 24 hours, check if there are undissolved salt crystals at the bottom of the jar. If the salt has fully dissolved, add a few more crystals and let it sit for additional hours. The salt water solution is ready once the water remains saturated, with some crystals at the bottom undissolved.
You can consume this water either in the morning or at night (for relaxation or improved sleep).
- Take half a teaspoon of Sole solution mixed with a full glass of water each morning on an empty stomach to support hydration and mineral balance.
- For a calming effect, mix a quarter teaspoon of Sole solution with a full glass of water about an hour before bedtime.
Note: Always dilute the Sole solution in water before drinking, as it is highly concentrated.
