95% of High Blood Pressure Cases Can Be Reversed. Here’s How

High blood pressure or hypertension is known as a silent killer. But guess what? It doesn’t have to be if you identify and take measures to control it before it gets out of hand. The truth is that high blood pressure or hypertension is plaguing millions as you read this. Did you know one in four people suffer from high blood pressure and don’t even know it?

Are you ignoring that throbbing pain in your head?
Thinking it is just a headache?
Do you find yourself lightheaded and dizzy?
Are you ignoring the pain that you constantly get between your eyes?
Or when you feel lethargic or have sudden energy slumps?

Pay attention to these signs. Yes, many of these symptoms could be due to other health issues, but it is always better to rule out high blood pressure after checking than leaving it undiagnosed.

High blood pressure isn’t just about your systolic and diastolic readings. It is about managing the damage it causes to several tender arteries, organs, and tissues. It is not okay to live with high blood pressure.

Did you know? When left untreated, high blood pressure or hypertension can lead to:

  • An increased risk of heart attack/failure
  • Strokes
  • Chronic kidney disease/Kidney damage
  • Vision issues
  • Low libido and erectile dysfunction
  • Memory issues
  • Organ damage, among other potentially life-threatening complications.

Truth bomb: Diabetes can lead to high blood pressure

India is the diabetic capital of the world. Yet not many people know that having Type 2 diabetes can increase your risk of high blood pressure, cardiac arrest, heart failure, and stroke, among others.

You cannot treat diabetes without looking at the heart. You cannot just treat the liver without looking at the kidney or digestion. Similarly, you can not just treat acidity without looking at the health of your liver. Every part of the human body is interdependent which is why an integrative approach is needed.

If you have diabetes, only looking at your HBA1c and fasting blood sugar levels won’t suffice. It is why most people are chronically sick because they rely only on their meds and live with diabetes for their entire lifetime. Most diabetics, in extreme cases, end up becoming chronic kidney disease patients.

How does Type 2 diabetes lead to high blood pressure? When you have fluctuating blood sugar levels, it can cause inflammation inside your arteries and blood vessels, damaging the endothelial lining and causing them to constrict and get hard. When these become constricted, your blood cannot flow freely, and your blood pressure builds up.

If you have Type 2 diabetes and you do not manage it, it will become a gateway to a ton of other medical conditions. The sooner you sort it out the better it is.

Can you reverse high blood pressure? In 95% cases, yes.

As I write this, thousands of people are no longer on blood pressure medication. We haven’t stopped their medication but their doctors have. How? They brought their systolic and diastolic readings under control by making the right lifestyle changes. And when they went back to their doctor, who reduced and eventually weaned them off that high BP medication.

What are some common causes of high blood pressure?

  • Poorly managed Type 2 diabetes
  • Poor lifestyle
  • Unhealthy eating habits, fad diets, ultra-processed foods, high-sodium foods
  • Lack of physical activity
  • Sleep deprivation
  • Chronic stress
  • Being overweight or obese
  • Age, genetics, and family history
  • Other medical conditions like kidney disease, sleep apnea, and thyroid disorders
  • Certain medications like birth control pills, decongestants, and pain relievers
  • Smoking and binge-drinking

How does your blood pressure medicine help? Is it enough?

Many high blood pressure patients are prescribed ACE (Angiotensin-converting enzyme) inhibitors, calcium channel blockers, ARBs (Angiotensin II receptor blockers), beta-blockers, renin inhibitors, alpha-blockers, and diuretics.

Take your medication because it can save your life. But understand this.

Low levels of potassium, magnesium, and certain amino acids in the body can also cause high blood pressure.

For instance, if you have uncontrolled high blood pressure and it is causing a kidney problem, it can lead to fluid buildup. Now you have edema in your foot. Your doctor recommends a diuretic to flush it out because that’s the correct medical treatment. But also note that diuretics flush out more magnesium and potassium from your body. When you have low levels of magnesium and potassium, you have higher blood pressure again. The next thing you know, you are on two or three kinds of blood pressure medication. You are now in a vicious cycle of depleting the minerals your body needs to maintain stable blood pressure.

Replenish potassium and magnesium because these play a huge role in bringing down your blood pressure.

Today, we will speak about a non-essential amino acid that works beautifully. It has been scientifically studied. When used the right way with patients, it can lower your blood pressure and eventually get you off your medication, provided you are also making lifestyle changes.

The magic non-essential amino acid – L-citrulline

L-citrulline, a non-essential amino acid, is also a precursor to another amino acid called L-arginine. L-arginine is found within your body in the endothelial linings of your blood vessels.

Understand and marvel at the intelligence of the human body. Imagine your blood is flowing through your blood vessel. If any of these vessels are constricted or become hard, due to plaque buildup or inflammation, your body will convert L-arginine into nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is a vasodilator that expands your blood vessels allowing blood to flow more freely. This vasodilation stabilizes your systolic and diastolic blood pressure readings to prevent a stroke or cardiac arrest.

Where is L-citrulline found?

It is found in small quantities in:

  • Watermelon
  • Pumpkin
  • Cucumber
  • Bitter gourd
  • Bitter melon
  • Squash
  • Legumes
  • Meat (Pork, beef, and chicken)
  • Seafood (Shrimp, tuna, and salmon)
  • Nuts (almonds and peanuts), and so on.

If you are a high blood pressure patient, speak to your doctor and nutritionist and check if you can start an L-citrulline supplement.

It is harmless unless you do it in excess. Anywhere between 3 to 6 grams of L-citrulline is recommended to lower high blood pressure.

It is not a medicine. It is something that your body can make in small quantities but you need it from your food sources. One of the biggest issues, if you are a diabetic with high blood pressure, is that you can’t go on eating too many watermelons, for instance, because the fructose will spike your blood sugar levels. So, opting for the supplement is a better choice after consulting your doctor.

Speak to your healthcare expert and take L-citrulline powder (3-6 gms). Do this for 12 to 24 weeks and check your blood pressure levels. And while you do any of these things or make natural changes that bring a fall into your blood pressure, be mindful to keep your doctor in the loop. You don’t want your blood pressure to dip so low that you go into hypotension. Monitor your levels. Consult your doctor to slowly revise your medication and reduce it if your blood pressure readings get better.

L-citrulline is available in powder form and even as malate. Many pro athletes and bodybuilders use l-citrulline because it helps create vasodilation for muscle recovery. The more blood you can rush to your muscles the faster they recover. People who work out intensively and are sore for many days can add L-citrulline to their diet beyond fixing their protein and improving their sleep.

If you cannot do L-citrulline for some reason, you can eat foods rich in L-arginine or take an L-arginine supplement.

What foods are rich in L-arginine?

  • Spinach
  • Beetroot
  • Garlic
  • Carrots
  • Broccoli
  • Walnuts
  • Flax
  • Whole eggs

When you eat these powerful sources of L-arginine, your body will convert it into nitric oxide which is a vasodilator.

You may wonder – why don’t I do L-arginine instead of L-citrulline?

Science shows that L-citrulline, which is the precursor to L-arginine, will work better in the long run to reduce your overall blood pressure. You can use L-citrulline or L-arginine. I am a fan of using L-citrulline because the precursor is always better.

Only L-citrulline isn’t enough, manage your chronic stress.

If chronic stress is the root cause of your high blood pressure, you need to manage it. Foods cannot change or repair the damage your stress is causing. Practice forgiveness, acceptance, letting go, breathing exercises, and surrender – do what it takes to reduce the impact of stress on your body. You could be having L-citrulline, but if your stress is causing your high blood pressure, it won’t work as effectively as it should.

Move more

The health of your blood vessels matters. They travel across your body, connecting various organs and carrying blood. If there is a problem with the blood vessel there will be a problem with the transportation of blood, nutrients, and oxygen. Oxygen deprivation due to poor blood flow can lead to the death of cells and organs. Do what it takes to maintain good blood circulation.

Adequate exercise is super important for the health of your blood vessels and your endothelium which is the inner lining of your blood vessels. If your endothelial lining gets damaged because of high pressure, it also affects your immune system. Your endothelial lining is responsible for immune factors.

In conclusion

Yes, high blood pressure is reversible in 95% of cases if you move to action and get the correct integrative guidance. What about the balance of 5%? Unfortunately, sometimes when the damage is beyond repair, you can only try to improve the quality of life.

If you have high blood pressure issues, you don’t want to age with it. Look at it as a sign that your body is giving you to change your lifestyle. Identify and make the changes it needs. If you are in your 30s and 40s with high blood pressure and are not addressing it, what will it be like when you are 60?

The point is: If you can make a change to reverse your high blood pressure, why aren’t you doing it? Start today.
